About

Rachel La Fein

My parents gifted me paperback copies of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series when I was 9. The books are so dog-eared, creased and worn, I can hardly see what the cover picture is anymore because I read them so many times. I became convinced for many years afterward that if I could only find the right secret passageway, only find the right animal to talk to, I would be transported to Narnia and have all kinds of enthralling and escapist adventures, but alas, as with some of the children in the stories, it was not to be.
Now I write my way there instead, because though those threshold passageways may still be hidden to my physical eyes, I have not given up hope yet that maybe, just around that bend in the trail there, a shimmering fairy gateway will appear from underneath a fallen log through which a new world will beckon…
I have been a lover of the fantastical, the archetypal, and mysterious realms my whole life. Stories with these elements become the magic carpet ride into our creative imagination and offer metaphors for strengthening ourselves in difficult circumstances and show us how to create meaningful friendships or perhaps are simply a way to Go. Somewhere. Else.
My undergraduate degree is in Creative Writing with Distinction. I taught high school English, Photography and Drama in a small mountain town in Northern California for 29 years during which I wrote, produced and directed three of my own plays (besides the 23 others I directed and produced), had two gallery photography shows, (one collaborative, one on my own) took students traveling on educational tours around the world, and in the midst of all that, have successfully managed to celebrate 42 years of marriage to the same wonderful man, raise 3 children, garden, hike, travel with family, and finish my fantasy trilogy of approximately 1400 pages. I am still in amazement at how I managed to complete drafts of all three novels during those busy years!
I am currently in the final revision stage of my debut novel, Song of the Mage, with a plan to publish by July 2026. The two other books in the series, Song of the Bluewood Tree and Song of the Dragon, have yet to be revised and edited. I plan to begin the second book in August of 2026, with the hope of completing it by the end of the year.
Thank you for visiting my site! I would love to hear from you :)
P.S. I do not use AI in my writing. However, nearly all of the fantasy images on this site are AI-generated, with the exception of the cover, created by Ikaruna, as I am creating my own website and haven't seen any dragons around lately to photograph. Let me know if you see one.
